North Hills Girls’ Lacrosse Team defeated Baldwin 13-9 in the opening round of the WPIAL Division 2 Lacrosse Championships.

North Hills was down 7-2, but rallied to tie the score at 8-8 at the half. In the second half the Lady Indians played great defense and added 5 goals to garner the win.

North Hills will play the winner of the Shaler/Ellis match next Tuesday in the WPIAL Semifinals. The game will be played at Martorelli Stadium at 6 pm.

Mike participated in football, basketball, and track while Emily played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.

Senior Midfielder Natalie DiPaolo

Senior Midfielder Natalie DiPaolo has been named Post Gazette High School Athlete of the week. Natalie has scored a team high 46 goals this season, and is one of the reasons North Hills is 12-0.

Governor Corbett signed the Safety in Youth Sports Act  in a ceremony at Lower Dauphin High School, Dauphin County. The state General Assembly passed it on November 1. The legislation is Senate Bill 200, introduced by Sen. Patrick M. Browne (R-Lehigh). It was shepherded through the House by Rep. Timothy P. Briggs (D-Montgomery), who had introduced the companion bill, House Bill 200.

This bill establishes standards for managing concussions to student athletes. In order to return to play the athlete must be cleared by a licensed psychologist trained in neuropsychology, by a physician who is trained in the evaluation and management of concussions, or by certain other health care providers under the supervision of the physician. The Pennsylvania Psychological Association’s advocacy was instrumental in this bill’s passage. The association’s past president, Dr. Mark Hogue stated, “This new law will be extremely important to any athlete who suffers a concussion. Athletes who return to play prematurely are at risk of a second concussion, which can be life-threatening.” Dr. Hogue is a clinical and sport psychologist from Erie.

The bill will require the state Departments of Health and Education to develop and post on their websites information on the nature of concussions in athletic activities and the risks associated with continuing to play or practice after a concussion. Student-athletes and their parents or guardians must sign an acknowledgment of receipt of an information sheet on concussions prior to participation in athletics. It will require coaches to complete a concussion management certification training course before coaching any athletic activity. During an athletic contest coaches will be required to remove athletes from competition if they exhibit signs of a concussion.

The legislation will become effective on July 1, 2012, in time for the next school year. It does not pertain to private schools, but only to public schools. It covers interscholastic athletics as well as other sports associated with a school entity, and includes cheerleading, practices, and scrimmages.

 The track and field team has completed its regular season schedule and now prepares for Invitationals and WPIAL Qualifiers.

April 27th is the Mars Inviational. May 1 the WPIAL Sectional Invitational, and May 3 the Baldwin Invitational.

Margo Malone

Margo Malone, an outstanding student athlete from North Hills, is the recipient of the 2011/2012 WPIAL  Scholar Athlete Award. She is one of four WPIAL athletes to be named.

The WPIAL annually awards four $5,000 scholarships to deserving WPIAL senior student athletes. The other awardees are Luk Hay, Mt. Lebanon, Asa Equels, Beaver Area, and Sarah Miller of Quaker Valley.

Margo will be recognized at the WPIAL Scholar Athlete Luncheon on May 21st at the Doubletree Hotel in Greentree. A cross country and track distance runner, Margo will be attending Syracuse University in the fall of 2012.

The JamFest will feature twin brothers from Travis High School in Fort Bend, Texas, and one of the twins is ranked the No. 1 junior in the country. Andrew Harrison is a 6-foot-5 point guard who is Rivals.com’s No. 1 player, while his brother, Aaron, is ranked No. 7 in the class of 2013 by Rivals. They play for the Houston Defenders AAU team, which is coached by their father. The Harrisons have a number of scholarship offers, including from Kentucky.

Youth Clinic Held Prior to Pitt Spring Football Game

 There was plenty to do on Saturday at the Pitt Spring Football Game held at Martorelli Stadium on Saturday, April 14th. Fans could purchase season tickets, buy Pitt gear, visit the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibits. Young fans could play on any number of blowup rides, and participate in a clinic held by the players prior to the game.

There was plenty of food on hand as the Band and Football Boosters sponsored the concession stand.

This was Coach Paul Chryst’s first major event as the newly appointed head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. He chose to go into the community and hold his first Spring game at North Hills High School’s Martorelli Stadium.

Close to 5000 fans decked out in their Pitt gear were on hand. Larry Fitzerald wa present at the game and drew a great deal of attention.
