Sportsmanship as an Important Component of Interscholastic Sports
North Hills is a strong believer in the fundamentals of Sportsmanship.
We commend our coaches, players, fans, and support personnel for adhering to the motto -
“sportsmanship is everyone’s business.”
Our goal in challenging everyone to do their part is as follows:
- Exercise Representative Behavior at All Times
- Exhibit Respect for Contest Officials
- Display Respect for the Opponent
Role of Parents in Sportsmanship is An Important One
- Encourage your son or daughter to do their best – be supportive of their effort. What you say to them after the game may have a bearing on your relationship with them. How you handle a win or loss may be different from how they do.
- Respect the effort of the sons and daughters of the opposing team.
- Realize that contest officials represent authority and act accordingly by respecting their decisions.
- Support the coaches of both teams who have undertaken the responsibility of preparing the student athlete for competition.
- Refrain from outbursts that can be deemed derogatory in nature. Refrain from use of profanity or trash talk as a parent.
- Serve as a good example as a parent to those around you, including children.
- Realize that entrance to the game is a privilege and not a right – it can be forfeited for the remainder of the contest, future contests, or the remainder of the season. This can be an embarrassment for a family and for the host school.
- Support the effort on everyone involved by congratulating them after the contest – players on both teams, parents from both teams, coaches from both teams, and the officials
